Since I’ve been ill for the past six days, here is a very late recap from Tampa...
In Game 1, Dice-K stepped up after the first inning. In the second game, Beckett did not perform up to expectations or on par with his production this season. The Sox also got lucky on wild pitch from Dan Wheeler, as I predicted, that tied up the game. As we know, the Olde Towne Team lost the game when Mike Timlin got hit in extra frames. The veteran had to come in at that point of the game - Byrd had to be saved. The question is why Timlin was selected over David Aardsma?
And now, the late Recap from Fenway...
From section 27, Lester had an average outing. He made two mistakes that yielded four runs. The timing could not have been worse. Lester was not the problem. The complete lack of hitting, aside from DP, was startling. The lineup had a very good approach against a relatively wild Matt Garza. They were patient got in hitter’s counts, but failed to hit Garza’s heat. The Sox got few good hacks at the mid-90’s fastball, even though they knew it was coming. It was very discouraging and even more so than last night, as I didn’t expect much from Wake. Game 4 was the largest pitching mismatch. A loss was somewhat expected. After watching Tek and Wake this season, both still have value but not as key members of on October baseball team.
But this thing isn’t ovah! We got Dice-K going who can beat Kazmir tomorrow, then Lester in a Game 6 and anything can happen in the seventh. Boy, I wish Theo and company got Kevin Millar this summer or Bluto.
