WILKERSON COULD BE A GOOD SIGN
The signing of Brad Wilkerson to a minor league deal is NOT Red Sox news. Wilkerson isn’t the versatile, power and patient hitter I watched in Montreal. According to a Scout interviewed by Buster Olney, his shoulder isn’t right. Now on the wrong side of thirty, a comeback is unlikely and Wilkerson will probably log time in RI this summer.
But what this could indicate is that the Sox are not fully confident that Mark Kotsay is an adequate backup for Kevin Youkilis and Mike Lowell. He could be back in Boston to just provide Ben Afflack Supplemental Insurance in the outfield due to Rocco Baldelli’s health issues. Kotsay hasn’t been able to hit as an average major leaguer since 2005 – let alone a first baseman. With that being said, the Sox don’t need to be aggressive on this issue, although they do need to recognize the potential problem and have a plan in place to resolve it.
