CONTIGENCY PLANS

If the Sox become assured that Julio Lugo is NOT going to post another sub-300 OBP, Kevin Youkilis could emerge as a trading chip. Lugo and Mike Lowell are going nowhere with their contracts. Jed Lowrie and Brandon Moss could play most of the time at first. Both are inexperienced at the position but it is the easiest place to play on the field. Youk’s ability to play third makes him more valuable to other clubs than the Sox. Some GM might be willing to move a starter for a 2.5 years of above average production at third for a below market salary. The Sox are going to need another consistent productive starter behind Josh Beckett. Hopefully, Dice-K, da Buck, and/or Colon work can provide, but smart organization have a plan B, C, D...Y-oukilis.
