WRONG AGAIN
If the reports are correct, Mike Lowell like Curt Schilling left money on the table to play for the Sox. As regular readers know, I wanted Miguel Cabrera. I also didn’t want the Sox to give out long-term deals because it would limit their future opportunity to acquire Johan Santana, C.C. Sabathia, Mark Teixeira or Miguel Cabrera. Now that Santana and Cabrera will likely be off the market next winter and the Sox should get the 2006 Lowell in 2008 and 2009, Lowell’s three year contract is not so bad.
DOING THE MATH
It is conventional wisdom that if Hillary Clinton wins Iowa, she will be the Democratic nominee. It is also likely that Hillary will be the first female President. Assuming she holds the states Kerry won (252 electoral votes), Hillary only needs to win Arkansas (6 EV), New Mexico (5 EV) and Iowa (7 EV). Bill wins Arkansas for his wife. If Mitt Romney is her opponent and wins Iowa, Tom Vilsack is VP. Iowa is no longer in doubt and resources get dumped into New Mexico. If Rudy Giuliani wins, Hillary selects Bill Richardson and N.M. is in the bag and the Clinton machine goes back to Iowa. FL, OH, VA, CO will not matter; Hillary will already have 270 EV. It is Iowa or bust for everyone.
