OCTOBER
The Red Sox magic number for a postseason appearance is seven and eleven to win the division. They are a virtual lock (knock on wood). This series and the rest of the season should be preparation for October baseball NOT to have the best record. The possibility of an extra home game and/or selecting to use three or four starters is not more important than getting this team ready for the playoffs. These next 15 games should be similar to the last Spring Training games. The club needs to get healthy, most notably Manny and Big Papi, get back on track – Dice-K, Wake and Gagne – and everyone needs to rest. The Sox have to take advantage of this opportunity. No one remembers who had the best regular season record; only the team that won the last game in October.
