I SEE YOUR MVP AND RAISE YOU A CY YOUNG

Kevin Garnett and the Celtics will have to wait. Okay one thing - whoever runs the Celtics PR department should be fired or who leaked the deal. The Celtics had to share the news cycle with the Red Sox trading deadline. The best development for the C’s in two decades gets thrown to the curb in a day. WTF?!

When assessing the Sox needs early on, my conclusion was a right-handed setup man because Okie wasn’t going to keep this up. (I still feel this way. Hitters will adjust a second time around.) Recently, I thought Manny Delcarmen, a healthy Brendan Donnelly and Mike Timlin could get the job done. In the past week, Timlin hasn’t thrown, Donnelly had a set back and Delcarmen has been getting hit hard so this was a good move, and certainly based on the price.

The Sox sent a swing arm (Gabbard), their third centerfielder (Murphy), and a talented teenager (Beltre) for a former Cy Young award winner and the best pitcher available. This is a steal! Beltre is the only valuable asset sent to Texass and a similar talent can be bought in the Dominican or Venezuela this winter and/or the Sox can overpay their compensation draft pick(s) next year. Basically, they bought Gagne to give them a potentially dominating bullpen. And the inequitable amateur draft was a significant factor in making this trade possible. As a Sox fan, I love it but as a baseball fan, it is wrong.

Other deadline notes:

* Krivsky is a fool for not trading Adam Dunn today.

* Kenny Williams decided to roll the draft dice or try to resign Dye instead of seeing what WMP can do for two months or if they can fix Craig Hansen like Bobby Jenks.

* The Padres improved their club yet again by giving up very little.

* The released Bobby Kielty and Russell Branyan should be signed to minor-league deals. If needed in Sept or before, and they are, the Sox have room on their 40-man.
