BILLY BEANE IS PLAYING WITH HOUSE MONEY
Billy Beane is the second GM (Kevin Towers was the first) to take advantage of Lou Pinella’s inability to smooth things out with Michael Barrett and the rest of the team, as Jason Kendall is sent to Chicago. (I met Barrett in Montreal and he seemed like a polite nice guy for what its worth.) The big deal here is that Beane now has roughly $3 million more dollars to work with over the next 15 days less what is being sent to the Cubs (I doubt it is much). He could also find another $2.8 million by moving Piazza’s contract, which gives Beane conservatively $4.5 million for the last two months of the season meaning the A’s could add a $13.5 million player like Barry Bonds?
