IN TROT, WE STILL TRUST
Trot Nixon is the original DirtDog. He not only played all out - all the time, but was a plus fielder, got on-base, hit for some power and average against righties. He was an asset, although it did hinder the Sox roster flexibility. The Olde Towne Team needed to keep a Gabe Kapler on the club and Doug Mirabelli. It's tough putting together a bench with two spots already filled.
TRIPLE PLAY
* Don't look now, but Dustin Pedroia is starting to hit like he did in the minors.
* The reports are correct. Clay Buchholz needs better command of his fastball. The control - throwing pitches for strikes - is fine, but he needs to keep his heater down in the zone. As Josh Beckett found, even mid-90's fastballs get taken for a ride in the A.L. East.
*Jed Lowrie could be turning the corner in Portland. At worse, Lowrie should grow up to a nice utility player.
