...when I get home and HBO is playing Field of Dreams.

Buster Olney wondered if Craig Hansen or Manny Delcarmen are now available with Papelbon moving into the pen to bring Todd Helton to Boston. I say no. In most cases, the Sox do not trade players when their value is at its lowest level. And a big N-O, if Mike Lowell is going to Denver as well. Regardless of salary considerations, Baseball Prospectus’ PECOTA has Lowell with a WARP at 4.4 and Helton at 4.3. If the deal went as the Rockies had wanted, the Sox would have lesser team on the field, a poorer pen and a bad balance sheet.

One other note on Paps to the pen, I am not totally convinced that the former contestants to be the next Red Sox closer are elated with this move. Donnelly and Pineiro have games finished bonus clauses. Tavares‘ 2008 option could have vested if he stayed in the pen, although he could do better as a starter this winter. Certainly, Donnelly and Pineiro’s agent(s) are not pleased. Here’s hoping Theo has already smoothed things over with their representative(s), but maybe not.
