RED SOX RUMORS
We interrupt our regularly scheduled program to indulge in a double-play of Red Sox rumors. Well…they are only rumors in my head.
* If Papelbon heads to the rotation (Theo indicated in today’s Globe that it is not a done deal and if health was not a concern Paps would be in the pen.) and Dave Wallace remains as the Sox pitching coach, Eric Gagne might be at the top of the list for the job as the Olde Towne Team‘s closer. It has been reported that Wallace first suggested that the Montreal native head to the pen. Gagne’s option with the Dodgers will not be picked. He should become a free agent just-in-time for the Sox to pounce on a low risk/cost - high return signing. It could also further expand Red Sox Nation (a.k.a. new sources of revenue) into the MLB-less Montreal market.
* No matter what Manny’s trade me to team list looks like, if it actually exists, he is only going to be dealt to the Dodgers or to Philly. These are the only two clubs that could be in the market for his services, and due to their Managers - Shady Chicken Little and the fat pale man, Charlie Manuel - that Ramirez might not demand being paid for waiving his 10-5 trade veto rights. If history is any indicator, the Sox are highly unlikely to subsidize Ramirez’s compensation while playing for another team. It seemed like a matter of principal for John Henry. Hence, the number of possible trading partners is few.
