GEORGE COSTANZA OR KOTTARAS
George Kottaras was not in Portland's lineup last night so with all of the rumors, he is likely coming to Boston. Kottaras gives the Sox a backup in the short-term and future replacement for Tek. The only other real front line catching prospect, Jon Egan, I watched earlier in the week play a game in low-A ball (more on this soon - no doubt). Egan's ETA is around 2010. But Kottaras isn't a lock to make the big club next season, he is struggling with the bat in AAA.
Baseball Prospectus 2006 states:
"...he looks like he's going to be a pretty fair defensive backstop. His 36 doubles and 69 walks last year point to some promising line-drive power and a good batting eye, traits that will serve him well at higher levels. With just 101 Double-A at bats on his record, he won't be a factor in the big leagues in 2006."
Bruce Bochy said Kottaras looks similar at the plate to John Olerud. It would be great to have just one season like Johnny O's usual 300/400/465 line from Kottaras.
