BY THE NUMBERS

If Manny doesn't play again this season, he would average 140.5 games played and 610.7 plate appearances in a Red Sox uniform. Another outfielder to wear #24, Dwight Evans, excluding his first and last years, would be at 138.2 GP and 565.3 PAs. The other corner outfielder of that era, Jim Rice, and again less his first and last years, averaged 143.5 GP and 625.4 PAs. Manny has played just as much as the Sox last kick ass outfielders and I would bet all of them played hurt.

It is time to move David Wells and Mark Loretta. The Sox emphasis on defense should translate into Dustin Pedroia playing second, not shortstop, next season. So Mark Loretta does not have a home with the Sox infield in 2007. It is close to a fact that clubs will no longer receive draft pick compensation for departing free agents, which means that Loretta should be dealt now.
