TITO WAS OUT MANAGED LAST NIGHT

John Gibbons put his team in a better position to eventually win the game in the eighth inning. He went with his best reliever to squash the Sox comeback. Gibbons out managed Tito. Francona did not bring in Papelbon for the eighth inning in a tie game, instead going with Riske, his fourth best reliever, who promptly gave up the game winner (this is assuming Paps could have gone last night). Tito did not do his part in the absence of Timlin, nor did Matt Clement, who is now in the DiNardo category - pray and drink heavily before the games he starts. Oh and if things weren't bad enough, David Wells won't be ready for Wednesday meaning we will likely need to endure an Abe Alvarez start.

* If the Sox are watching Kyle Lohse, as Nick Cafardo has reported, then Nipper or someone else in the organization better know how to fix the recently demoted, expensive, poor performing starter.

* It is highly unlikely that Zito or the D-Train will be heading to Boston. The Sox are not going to part with their top prospects in this “transition year”. Livan Hernandez and the $15 million owed over the next two seasons is a better possibility.

* From the HOFer, Peter Gammons’ blogthe Red Sox have limited Jon Lester to ascending pitch counts. Starting at 45, it's now up in the 80s. Hence, while Lester is now pitching very well, he has thrown only 37 innings. "We want him relatively fresh come August and September," says a Red Sox official. "It frustrated him, but it was the best thing for him and for the big-league team." Hopefully, Lester will be the power southpaw out of the pen - meaning that the rotation will be solid - in the dog days. Regardless, he’ll be playing the role of Paps last August filling in where needed.

* It is great to see one of my regular stops, The Vermont Pub and Brewery, get some love in a fairly major newspaper. The Pub has great beer (Burly is my favorite and the cask conditioned selections are always nice), good inexpensive food (Shepard’s pie, pulled pork, meatloaf and fish ‘n chips are top notch), and the staff couldn’t be better. Like Ben & Jerry’s, the Vermont Pub and Brewery should be on the must see list when coming up to Burlington.
