It should NOT be all about 2006

Unless the Sox have soured on Andy Marte - disagreeing with every other independent prospect guru - then the proposed deal to bring Coco Crisp to Boston is all about the NOW. From 2007 to 2009 and based on the current CBA, Marte would earn the league minimum or roughly $1 million and Crisp, according to Chris Snow, would make about $17 million with both as everyday productive players. It is more likely (Crisp is unlikely to become Andruw Jones and Marte a pumkin) that Marte will be a more valuable player than Crisp from 2007 to 2009 due to the disparity in compensation. Hence, the acquistion of Crisp is all about another postseason push in 2006.

Coco would put the Sox back in the hunt and Jason Michaels could do the same at far lower price or middle reliever. Michaels is a riskier option than Crisp, since he has never been an everyday player and is exiting his prime years, but over the last two seasons he has been just as productive with the wood as Crisp.

Jason Michaels – 2005 - 304/399/415 – 2004 - 274/364/415
Coco Crisp – 2005 - 300/345/465 – 2004 - 297/344/446

The Sox would be paying a high price, in the form of Marte, for a few more doubles and a better night’s sleep for everyone on Yawkey Way. Hopefully, the return of Theo will shed some light on the long-term problem with this deal.

"Theo has been the principal advocate of the longer view of the Red Sox," says Lucchino, "and I have to say I think he has been correct."

It is time for the Sox to back out of this three-way deal, as they seemingly did over the Winter Meetings – Marte was supposed to be swapped for Julio Lugo, and get a deal done with Philly for Michaels. Mota, Delcarmen and cash should trump the Indians rumored offer of Arthur Rhodes or Rafael Betancourt.
