HE'S BACK

Theo Epstein is back with the Red Sox, but what will change? Word is it won't be Larry. My money is on the Dentist. Dr. Charles Steinberg Executive Vice President/Public Affairs will get the M.L. Carr treatment. He will be stripped of his power and the good doctor will be heading up Fenway Park Fan Relations.

But was Theo a part of the decision to ink Arroyo to a three-year deal? All of Arroyo's numbers moved in the wrong direction from 2004 - K/9, BB/9, HR/9, G/F ratio. He is exiting a player's normal prime years - 26 and 27. Club's have started to figure Arroyo out by stacking their lineup with LHB. This year he faced 469 southpaws versus 333 RHB. It was basically even in 2004. Although the most telling evidence is that Arroyo's K and walk rate both trended unfavorably even against RHB in 2005.

The facts indicate that Arroyo's contract will likely be viewed as a poor signing for the Sox. He will need to make major adjustments and improvements for the multi-year deal to be a bargain or the hometown discount it is being portrayed. The Sox were taken.
