WELCOME BACK DAVE ROBERTS
The Cameron for Nady deal will not end the Manny to the Mets speculation (more on this at a later date), but it does heat up the David Wells-Dave Roberts plus "someone" rumor. San Diego now has a gold glover in centerfield flanked by (this is a signal that Giles is gone) two inexpensive centerfielders - Freddy Guzman and Ben Johnson.
“We need that defense in our park. Our outfield defense was a mistake we made last year."
Towers’ earlier trade of Brian Lawerence for Vinny Castilla opens up a spot in the rotation for Wells. The plus "someone" in the deal with determine how much possible cash is exchanged and is likely the hold up.
An acquisition of Roberts does not rule out resigning Damon, but it does give the Sox a backup plan. A centerfield platoon of Roberts against righties (278/355/443) and someone like Phillies’ Jason Michaels versus southpaws (289/363/415) would make an adequate replacement for Johnny Damon at a fraction of the cost.

Alejandro Machado or a young Figgins would allow the Sox to have a platoon in RF and CF. He can play anywhere. He could be Nixon's platoon in RF. Basically, Machado gives the Sox the flexibility to be creative.
