…AND KNOWING IS HALF THE BATTLE

''I'm walking a lot of guys and I've been erratic," Mantei said. ''I've got to figure it out pretty quickly. I've gotten into a rut and I've got to work out of it. I'm going to throw a bullpen today to see if I can't work it out."

It has taken two and half months for Mantei to realize that he can’t consistently control his stuff and that additional practice is necessary. He has hit four batters and has allowed 15 unintentional walks in only 21 and 2/3 innings. Those numbers don’t lie.

Mantei’s signing was a low financial risk – high on field reward acquisition. Mantei is a strikeout pitcher that was and is necessary for the middle innings with runners on. Unfortunately, he is walking as many as striking out.

Since Mantei is the least effective and costly one inning reliever, he will certainly be on the bubble with the return of Curt Schilling if not sooner.
