SPIN YOUR PARTNER ROUND AND ROUND
Renteria, who has the plate discipline and bat control Cabrera was lacking -- the kind that should make him an ideal No. 2 hitter in the Sox' lineup…
If plate discipline and bat control is measured by BB/K ratio, then Cabrera has been better over his career than Renteria- .76 versus .64. Over the last three seasons, Renteria is .81 and Cabrera is .81. By the numbers, Cabrera has just as good plate discipline and bat control compared to Renteria. Unfortunately, I foresee more spinning of the Renteria signing in the coming days.
This deal is starting to smell like the Manny situation. Double D had to make a big move after he lost out on Mussina. The Renteria deal appears to be reactionary, as was Manny’s, driven by trying to control the media agenda. (Even though Manny is a great player, the Sox would not hesitate moving his contract in the right deal.) Renteria doesn’t fit the Red Sox philosophy on the field (BB/OBP/SLG) and on the balance sheet (four year deal). The timing of the deal is just a little too coincidental for this overly PR concerned organization.
If the Sox control the agenda and the spin in the media, they control the majority of the fans/customers perception of the off season. They do not want the notion that the club is being stripped or that they are not spending after a historic season on the field and on the top of their profit and loss statement.
Players are getting in on the spin game too.
Pedro on Mike and the Mad Dog: "If the they had offered the third year a week ago, I'd be signed with the Red Sox right now."
C’mon, Pedro that is B.S. Negotiations do not work like that. A party does not put their last offer on the table until the end of the talks is in sight. It still would have played out the same way just a week earlier.
"Calgone take me away!"
