THE RED SOX ARE THE 600 POUND GORILLA
The first free agent signing for the World Series Champs is Matt Mantei. Mantei, pending a medical exam, will earn 750K plus incentives next year. IF HEALTHY, the RP will be the strikeout/miss bat guy coming out of the pen in the middle innings to strand inherited runners. When healthy, Mantei can fill that role very well. He throws in the mid-90's with a nice curveball and slider. Mantei is overpowering when he is on the mound and throwing strikes.
The signing is fairly cheap/low risk with medium reward for the Sox. Other than the HUGE elbow issue and by all accounts, Mantei has not thrown a ball since early last May. How do the Sox know that after another elbow surgery in June that Mantei not only will be healthy but effective? This is the type of deal that large market teams have the luxury to make. The Sox may not be the 800 lb. gorilla, that title belongs to the MFY, but the 600 lb. gorilla sounds about right.
