Wells will receive a $3 million signing bonus and annual salaries of $2.5 million. He'll earn $200,000 for starts Nos. 11-20 and $300,000 for Nos. 21-30.

Theo explains the reasoning behind the deal.

``One way you can potentially mitigate the (financial) risk is to try to find a pitcher, when healthy, who performs at a high level and is a really good fit, and to try to structure a contract that mitigates the risk for you,'' said general manager Theo Epstein, who refused to mention Wells by name due to the pending physical.
