THE NEW CURT SCHILLING
I’m at Fenway tonight, Philly tomorrow and should arrive home right before Sunday’s game so a Game 3 preview is early. LET’S GO RED SOX!
***
Sunday is a nice match up for the new Schilling – a control pitcher. When the new Schilling makes a mistake it gets hit hard. That’s the difference in 5-7 miles per hour. Pitching in a relatively larger stadium against a lineup that has few power threats should assist the new Schilling. LAA should make a lot of contact and early in the count against the new Schilling. The Sox glove work will be a big factor in this game. Thankfully, they were the second best defensive team in turning balls in play into outs. If he can locate and Coco and company can get to everything hit in outfield, seven strong is a good possibility from the new Schilling.
And with defense being a premium, Alex Cora should get the start on Sunday over Julio Lugo. Plus, Cora might actually have a better shot at hitting Jered Weaver. Weaver is tougher on RHB for two reasons: 1) his twirling delivery makes it tough to pickup the ball coming out of his hand; 2) his best pitch – the slider - is more effective darting down and away to RHBs instead of into the power area for many southpaws. Weaver’s slider has less margin for error against lefties.
