THE SOX ARE BUYERS AND...
The emergence of Manny Delcarmen in the bullpen is HUGE for two reasons: 1) he fills the Sox most significant weakness, and 2) it is a sellers market for pitching. The Olde Towne Team will not even be tempted to part with assets or top prospects for short-term gain. Theo should be able to acquire a bat or two like Mark Loretta or Reggie Sanders (Ellsbury is the backup centerfielder – right is the issue) to supplement the offense without giving up a top youngster. Or maybe Adam Dunn around 2:30 pm. on July 31st gets on a plane. Anyway, the Sox could be a seller as well as a buyer.
If Schilling is effective and Gabbard stays in the rotation, the Sox have plenty of arms in the back of the pen. The new old long-man Mike Timlin, Allard Baird's boys: Joel Pineiro and Kyle Snyder [Pineiro is out now], and Bat $hit a.k.a. Julian Tavarez would all be vying for, what should be, the final sixth spot in the pen. Of course, “these things tend to work themselves out”, but with Jon Lester [now back in the Show], Clay Buchholz or the Lobster Man waiting in the wings Sox could consider putting Tavarez on the block.
The why is tomorrow.
