REDUCING YOUR OWN FLEXIBILITY

Even though Papelbon may have needed the work, since he last threw only 13 pitches on Thursday, Tito should not have called his name yesterday for the ninth. The Sox were up by four runs and have three consecutive games against the MFY.

If Papelbon did not pitch yesterday, Tito could have used him in any two games in the MFY series. Assuming Paps will not pitch three days in a row, the relief ace will not be able to go today and Tuesday. Papelbon may not be necessary in both game one and two, but Tito should not have limited his own options in this series. It was not good use of Papelbon.
